Renewables and Solar Mini-Grids Gain Momentum.
June 09, 2026
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is intensifying efforts to promote solar mini-grids as part of Nigeria's energy-transition strategy. Multiple industry conferences this month are focusing on renewable energy deployment, rural electrification, and decarbonization pathways.
At the same time, the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), with support from European partners, has introduced guidelines for integrating solar mini-grids into the national electricity framework.
Significance/Impact: More than 80 million Nigerians still face unreliable electricity access, making decentralized solar solutions increasingly important.'
Nigeria drives its renewable energy transition through the Energy Transition Plan (ETP), which aims for net-zero emissions by 2060.
The country prioritises decentralised solar power, green manufacturing, and massive multilateral investments to combat grid fragility and end its heavy reliance on petrol and diesel generators.
Launched to achieve net-zero, the ETP leverages a $410 billion investment strategy focused on expanding grid capacity, promoting clean cooking, and modernising the
power sector.
